If a radioactive source enters a scrap yard undetected, it can cause serious problems, such as the contamination of materials (like steel rods or metals) that, if they reach the market, could have legal consequences for the companies involved and a negative impact on public health. However, if the source is identified and removed in time, the risk of contamination is eliminated, and the recycling process continues without major inconveniences.
Additionally, many industry clients export scrap to other countries, and if a contaminated load is detected at its destination, it can be rejected, generating considerable economic losses.
